Chapter Guide – Book 2 Act 7.1.6 – Remix – Return of Ice Phoenix

Summoners!

Here’s my guide for Act 7.1.6 “Remix” in Marvel Contest of Champions.

General Thoughts: It’s the final chapter of Act 7.1. This chapter features 3 more “Mash-Up” Bosses, including the return of Ice Phoenix. While long-time players may still have nightmares from her debut, she’s actually the easiest of the three since there are so many counters for her Coldsnap now. Overall, this quest is a fun conclusion to Act 7.1.

Best Champs: Magneto, Colossus, Sunspot, Void, Archangel, Venom, Warlock, Falcon

Restrictions: 5-Star & 6-Star Champions Only

Global Node: Star Power, Adrenaline Rush, Hold The Line

Boss: Ice Phoenix

Boss Notes:
+150% Attack
+500% Health
Cold Fusion
Encroaching Stun
Power Axis 1
Power Buildup
Power Overflow

Ice Phoenix wears the costume of Dark Phoenix but has the abilities of Iceman. She will place a Coldsnap on you at the start of the fight, so you need a Coldsnap-Immune champion because otherwise you won’t survive the initial damage. Another thing to remember is there are two timers in the fight. The timer on you is the Encroaching Stun timer. The timer on Ice Phoenix is for the return of her Ice Armor. Remember you are basically fighting Iceman here, so be careful because the Ice Armor will eat your attempt to stun her.

If you have Colossus, he’s probably your best bet. Bring in Omega Red if you can for the synergy bonus, and just play the normal Colossus Heavy Spam until you can cancel into a SP2. Colossus has long specials, especially his SP1, which is great for Encroaching Stun.

Other options for this fight include Corvus Glaive, Warlock, Silver Surfer, and Sig 200 Namor.

Boss: Spider-Witch

Boss Notes:
+150% Attack
+500% Health
Backblast
Staggering Beauty
Power Buildup
Power Overflow

Spider-Witch is my favorite of the mash-up bosses. She has Spider-Gwen’s look with Scarlet Witch’s abilities. This fight has a lot to deal with. Poison- and Incinerate-Immunity are helpful but not required. Evade is also an issue, so you need to fight carefully. Falcon is a fantastic option, especially as a 6-Star. I also used Void, Sunspot, Iceman, and Archangel successfully in this fight.

Boss: Gwenperion

Boss Notes:
+150% Attack
+500% Health
High Energy Diet
Selective Timestream
Indomitable
Power Buildup
Power Overflow

Gwenperion is a mash-up of Gwenpool and Hyperion, and with the combination of nodes on her, she can be a real problem especially because of Selective Timestream. What I did is use Magneto with the “My Brotherhood” synergy (Juggernaut, Magik, Scarlet Witch, Sabretooth), which places a 12 second passive Heal Block on the opponent because Gwenpool is #Metal. Remember you can always swap one of the synergy partners in for the boss fight since you likely don’t need the synergy for the main path. If you are playing the normal Parry-Heavy Magneto style she should be Heal Blocked the entire fight so you don’t have to worry about Regeneration. Then just fire off some Sp1s for the Bleed damage and you’re set.

Another great option for this fight is Ronan, as his “Stun-Cheese” works because she builds Prowess.

Lane 1 – Down & Right – Gwenperion Boss

Gate: None

Defenders: Drax, Blade, Hulk,Guillotine, Night Thrasher, Captain America

Nodes: Recharge, Power Shield, Bubble Shield, Perforate

Team: Blade (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 200), Hyperion (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 73), Stark Spider-Man (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 200), Sabretooth (5-Star Rank 3 Sig 60), Magneto (5-Star Rank 5 Rank 21)

Tips: This is actually a fairly interesting path. Recharge will slow you down compared to the normal Power Shield experience, but can also help you. Look for champions with Passive Power gain (Hyperion, Blade, Dragon Man, Mephisto) to help speed things up. Hyperion is usually my go to for Power Shield, but with Recharge, Blade is actually the superior option in my opinion. With Recharge, he can heal and gain power at the same time!

You don’t need any specific counters for the path. Damage over time from the specials or big damage specials is the key. Because of the block restrictions, champions that you are more comfortable special intercepting with are good options. Of course, you can always just hold block until you get to an SP3.

For the Gwenperion boss I used Magneto with the Sabretooth Passive Heal Block synergy. She’s a tricky boss but at least she doesn’t have an SP3. The trick is to spam Heavy Attacks and launch Magneto’s SP1 right after her purify timer resets so she takes full damage from the SP1 Bleed. Be very careful with her timer. It will Purify all Debuffs, so if you’re about to attack her while stunned, she may suddenly wreck you. It took me a few tries, but I was about to get her down. Big thanks to Karatemike for tipping me off on the Magento/Sabretooth synergy.

Lane 2 – Down & Left – Gwenperion Boss

Gate: None

Defenders: Ronan, Longshot, Nick Fury, Human Torch, Elsa Bloodstone, Morningstar

Nodes: Biohazard, Acclimation, Coolant Leak, Combo Lock

Team: Sunspot (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 200), Iceman (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 200), Colossus (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 40), Magik (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 40), Magneto (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 21)

Tips: I don’t think the Acclimation node is actually much help here (maybe if you have Omega Red or Old Man Logan) so it’s better to just bring Bleed-Immune Mutants. Ideally I would say a Colossus synergy team with Emma Frost and Omega Red, with Magneto and one of his synergy partners (Magik, Sabretooth, Scarlet Witch, or Juggernaut) for the Gwenperion Boss. These are really just standard Biohazard fights when it comes down to it.

I used Colossus for Ronan, Nick Fury, and Human Torch, Iceman for Longshot and Elsa Bloodstone, and Magneto for Morningstar. It’s great that both Iceman and Colossus are also Incinerate-Immune as that takes significant risk off the table in the Longshot and Human Torch fights.

For the Gwenperion boss I swapped in Doctor Doom to give Magneto an extra synergy boost and it was Parry-Heavy-SP1 all the way to the KO.

Lane 3 – Center & Lower Lane – Spider-Witch Boss

Gate: None

Defenders: Ebony Maw, Mr. Sinister, Scarlet Witch, Venompool, Doctor Doom, Archangel

Nodes: Clapback, Eat Crow, Buffet

Team: Thing (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 200), Sunspot (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 200), Void (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 200), Human Torch (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 21), Nick Fury (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 21)

Tips: Sunspot and Human Torch receive a huge bonus from the Clapback node, and if you have both you’re set for this lane. Ebony Maw is neutered by the Eat Crow lane, so he can’t Degen you. It helps to have a Poison-Immune for Scarlet Witch, but you should be able to get through that fight with any 5/65 Science champ.

For my run I used Void for Maw and Scarlet Witch, Sunspot for Sinister, Venompool, and Archangel, and Thing and Human Torch for Doom.

If you do bring Thing with Human Torch, remember you can’t use Thing’s SP1 as you’ll trigger the Clapback node with the Incinerate Debuff added by the synergy.

Beyond that, these are pretty standard fights for the given defenders, so just go in with the right team.

I threw the whole team at Spider-Witch. Sunspot actually did the most damage, and I finished with Human Torch and his Nova Flames. Since Spider-Witch is a Mystic she doesn’t fair too well against Torch.

Lane 4 – Center & Up – Spider-Witch Boss

Gate: None

Defenders: Sunspot, Ms. Marvel Carol Danvers, She-Hulk, Aegon, Nebula, Doctor Strange

Nodes: Footloose, Transducer, Stun Vulnerability, Aggressive

Team: Void (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 200), Iceman (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 200), Sunspot (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 200), Human Torch (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 21), Falcon (6-Star Rank 3 Sig 34)

Tips: This lane is very easy as long as you just wait out the Footloose Evade and Unstoppable timers. You can just bring your heavy damage dealers like Sunspot and Archangel (mine was in war, or I would have brought him) to make quick work of the fights, or someone like Void that does damage while you are waiting out the timers. I ended up taking the Void route and using him for all the fights except She-Hulk, who I used Sunspot for.

I gave everyone a chance against Spider-Witch. Iceman is slow but safe. Falcon, as expected, did huge damage with his Lock On Ability.

Lane 5 – Up & Left – Ice Phoenix Boss

Gate: None

Defenders: Ant-Man, Kingpin, King Groot, Sabretooth, Howard The Duck, Sasquatch

Nodes: Particle Protector, Micro-Reflect, Size Matters, Bulk Up

Team: Void (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 200), Warlock (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 0), Venom (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 40), Sentinel (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 157), Colossus (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 40)

Tips: For this lane you want to avoid triggering the Micro-Reflect node. The easiest way to do this is by bringing XL champs and playing into the Size Matters node. You can bring smaller champs if they are primarily dependent on their Heavy attack, such as Archangel.

Once you’ve got your team this is a very easy lane. Sasquatch is the only difficult fight, but the King Groot and Kingpin fights do take a while.

I used Venom for Ant-Man and Howard The Duck, Sentinel for Kingpin, King Groot, and Sabretooth, and Void for Sasquatch. I think for the Kingpin and King Groot fights, you really need a XL champ so you can 5-combo and keep cycling the opponent’s SP1 to get openings, since Parry isn’t always an option with those two. Sentinel can do this just fine, but they are long fights. Of course, he is a fantastic matchup for the Sabretooth fight that follows.

For Sasquatch, you can just Parry/Heavy with Void until the fight is over. Save your special in case you get backed into a corner during his Wrath of Tanaraq. I then soloed Ice Phoenix with Colossus.

Lane 6 -Up then Right – Ice Phoenix Boss – Hard Path

Gate: None

Defenders: Darkhawk, Gambit, Warlock, Thor Ragnarok, Punisher 2099, Killmonger

Nodes: Destructive Feedback, Impatience, Small Arms, Cosmic Wrath

Team: Corvus Glaive (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 200), Warlock (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 0), Venom (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 40), The Champion (6-Star Rank 2 Sig 20), Colossus (5-Star Rank 5 Sig 40)

Tips: Cosmic champions get attack bonuses on this path so they are some of your best options. With this lane you’ve got the normal “keep-away” issue to avoid Destructive Feedback, and a few fights with an extra timer or bit of utility that you have to also counter.

Starting out is Darkhawk, one of the tougher fights, particularly if you don’t have a ranked Medusa or Aarkus. Ideally, you want to bait Darkhawk’s SP1 and avoid specials to keep him out of a mode. If he goes into a mode, that really limits your available attack windows and makes it a much longer fight.

Gambit is an easy fight, as is Warlock with a buff-heavy Cosmic. Thor Ragnarok is another semi-tricky fight, as you do have to account for this Power Gain and time your specials correctly while you’re also balancing the Destructive Feedback timer. Ideally, you want to push him over 20 hits right after the Destructive Feedback timer expires so you have plenty of time to complete your special attack.

Punisher 2099 isn’t too bad, but with his specials you have to be really careful with Destructive Feedback as it is so easy for him to transfer the damage. Killmonger also has the issue of his Reverberation, so having access to armor break in that fight is critical.

Personally, I used The Champion for Darkhawk, Gambit, and Thor Ragnarok, Venom for Warlock and Punisher 2099, and then Venom and Corvus for Killmonger. The Armor Break on Corvus’ Parry takes away most of the difficulty in the Killmonger fight, it was just pretty slow going since I wasn’t able to gain charges earlier in the path. I used the Champion early on mostly to tank damage in the Darkhawk fight, but he was doing pretty well so I continued on with him for a few fights.

For the Ice Phoenix boss I swapped in Omega Red to give Colossus the extra synergy boost and again got the solo.
